Coffee Squirrel

Writer's Block: Five-Finger Discount

Have you ever stolen something and gotten away with it? Did you feel guilty about it later?

A magazine from a drug store. I felt horrible afterward. It was in high school. Lots of kids had mentioned taking what they wanted. There was a really nice photo inside of Robert Smith of The Cure. I knew an acquaintance would love it. I was often in there looking at magazines. They didn't notice.

I gave the friend the photo and she squealed. I threw away the rest of the magazine as it was tainted and haunted me for a week. Today I don't even intentionally steal pens from an office, let alone something of value. I don't snitch on anyone who has done it, but I don't. It makes me sick to my stomach to take something that wasn't given or earned. It's not about sticking it to undeserving corporate types (though, I don't blame anyone for that -- if THEY were the only ones affected). Now, if it came down to a matter of survival, I'd reconsider the issue with no qualms. But when I don't have to? Nahh. One time is enough. That said, "Been Caught Stealing" by Jane's Addiction is one of my favorite songs. So there.
